Who is Praefectus in Chained Beasts?
Praefectus commands the Act 3 (Rome) climax alongside Praetorian Guard soldiers, per Featherweight launch materials and achievement grouping. Developer copy calls this the strongest boss so far, with catapults and a siege backdrop. That label is promotional wording plus achievement context—not a damage stat.
Act progression achievements frame the approach: Can’t Stand The Heat (Carthage), Out of the Cold (Germania), then Rome content culminating in Rebel Leader (Reach The Senate). Prior boss fact pages: Beastmaster Barca, Goliath, and the all bosses table.
What the achievements reveal about the fight
Achievement text is the clearest mechanical window because no official screenshot or Gameplay Trailer frame shows Praefectus or a catapult UI in the materials we reviewed. While some older pre-release pages claimed Praefectus mechanics were completely unknown, Steam’s public achievement list discloses two specific siege objectives:
| Achievement | Requirement (official wording) |
|---|---|
| Clearing the Skies | Kill the catapult before the Praefectus falls back |
| Don’t Look Up | Cause an opponent to die to catapult fire during the siege |
From those lines—and Featherweight’s official press release notes pairing Praefectus with the Praetorian Guard in Act 3 Rome—we can confirm the following facts without inventing steps:
- The encounter includes a siege component featuring catapult fire and Praetorian Guard troops alongside Praefectus.
- Achievement wording references the catapult (singular) during the siege.
- Clearing the Skies requires destroying the catapult before the Praefectus falls back—how much damage triggers that fallback, where the catapult sits in the arena, and whether ranged or thrown weapons can damage it are not disclosed beyond that sentence.
- Don’t Look Up requires causing an opponent to die to catapult fire during the siege; whether Praetorian Guard soldiers, standard arena enemies, or Praefectus himself count as that opponent is not disclosed.
Our reading of the wording (not confirmed in-game): players have a limited window to destroy the catapult before Praefectus retreats or changes position, and incoming catapult barrages create ground hazard zones that can kill enemies caught inside them—akin to how Goliath’s Deep Impact achievement rewards causing an opponent to die to Goliath’s leap attack. However, exact step order, invulnerability windows, and co-op credit are not disclosed in public text.
Track wording precisely on the achievements guide. Speed kills still reference generic Who’s The Boss (Kill a Boss within 10 seconds of first damaging them).
How do Praefectus and The Senate fit Act 3 Rome?
Featherweight’s official launch structure describes three acts and nine battles, plus a final encounter, progressing from Carthage (Act 1) to Germania (Act 2) and finally Rome (Act 3):
- Act 1 — Carthage: Anchored by Beastmaster Barca and survival achievement Can’t Stand The Heat.
- Act 2 — Germania: Anchored by Goliath in the frozen wasteland and survival achievement Out of the Cold.
- Act 3 — Rome: Features Praefectus and the Praetorian Guard siege, and culminates in the progression achievement Rebel Leader (Reach The Senate).
Whether The Senate is a separate final encounter after Praefectus or a multi-stage finale inside Rome is not spelled out in store copy; we list both on our all bosses overview exactly as the achievement list frames them.
What is not disclosed?
Featherweight and public Steam assets do not currently document:
- HP, armor, resistances, or phase names for Praefectus or the Praetorian Guard
- Number of catapults, their durability, or their hitbox rules
- Battle index within Act 3 or exact wave composition of Praetorian Guard adds
- Loot or merchant rolls tied specifically to the Rome siege
We also do not use snow combat screenshots or flail-enemy frames as stand-ins—those scenes lack siege engines and Praefectus labels.
Why this page uses Rome cutscenes only
Official Gameplay Trailer frames we reviewed show no catapult models, no Praefectus name bar, and no siege HUD. The closest Rome visuals are story cutscenes that must not be captioned as the Praefectus encounter:

The pediment letters S P Q R appear above the steps and legionaries, but the words The Senate do not appear on screen—do not equate this frame with the Rebel Leader finale or the Praefectus siege battle.

How should players prepare with verified systems?
Because Rome is the third and final act of a standard run, squads reach Praefectus carrying two full acts of accumulated upgrades and penalties:
- Afflictions and Surgeon / Healer choices: Each combat day adds skull-rated afflictions (up to milestones like Medical Marvel for winning with at least 20 skulls), while between-act visits to the Surgeon (store wording) or Healer (Gameplay Trailer screen) trade health or body parts (Dead Weight) for relief or augmentations. See afflictions and Trainer.
- Merchant equipment and arena weapons: Over a run, players can buy Passive, Arena, Instant, and Equipment cards from the 40+ item pool documented on merchant items, funded by post-battle Crowd Favorite rewards (crowd favorite and scoring).
- Chain coordination and difficulty: Keeping your 1–4 player chain clear of obstacles (co-op and multiplayer) and managing your chosen tier on the 10-level ladder (difficulty levels) apply throughout Act 3.
