FAQ

How many afflictions does Chained Beasts have?
Featherweight Games states the full game includes more than 70 afflictions. Individual names beyond those visible on official screenshots and the Gameplay Trailer are not listed in the sources we read.
What do the skull icons on affliction cards mean?
Affliction cards show skull slots on official screenshots. The Medical Marvel achievement requires winning a run while suffering afflictions totalling at least 20 skulls, which matches skulls as a severity counter. Exact rules per level are not disclosed in those sources.
Can you skip the Trainer entirely?
The Untrained achievement is "Win a run without levelling up at the Trainer." Overtrained requires reaching level 20 at the Trainer before winning. Skipping all Trainer interaction is therefore a defined challenge, not an undocumented exploit.
Does the Healer screen replace the Surgeon?
Store and announcement text describes a Surgeon who treats afflictions or offers augmentations between acts. The Gameplay Trailer shows a screen titled HEALER with potion-style choices. Featherweight has not stated whether these are the same NPC or separate systems.
What does "Can't choose first skill" mean?
The CHOOSE YOUR SKILL screen on Night 1 displays a sign reading "Can't choose first skill." Official sources we read do not define its trigger or meaning.
Can Twitch viewers pick your affliction potions?
Official announcements say Twitch integration lets viewers vote on which affliction potion you drink between rounds. Exact vote UI and eligibility are not described in the achievement or screenshot sources we used here.

What are afflictions in Chained Beasts?

Afflictions are persistent injuries and debuffs that stack across a run. Featherweight describes more than 70 afflictions in launch materials, with examples including limps, lost eyes, hallucinations, missing toes, and impaired vision. Store text says potions can relieve pain but side effects may cause worse afflictions, and a Surgeon between acts can treat afflictions or offer augmentations that trade new skills for a cost on every surgery—including amputation (achievement Dead Weight: Amputate a body part).

Official examples named in announcements (not tied to a single screenshot here) include Psychosis (hallucinated weapons), Untouchable (six seconds of invulnerability after an execution), and Priceless Vase (hold a vase and finish a fight unhurt for a 100 coin reward). We do not list full affliction rosters or numeric combat effects beyond what appears on verified screens.

For camp flow and chain combat basics, see the Chained Beasts beginner guide. Merchant purchases that interact with crowd favor are covered on the merchant items page.

How does affliction severity work?

Affliction cards on official UI show skull icons with multiple slots. On the Night 1 Trainer screenshot, each of four party afflictions is level I with one skull slot lit. The Test Subject achievement requires suffering the maximum level of every affliction, and Medical Marvel requires winning while afflictions total at least 20 skulls. Featherweight has not published a table mapping skull count to level numbers for every affliction name.

Our reading of the wording (not confirmed in-game): skull totals likely sum severity across the party or across active afflictions, because Medical Marvel uses a run-wide threshold rather than a single card.

What does the Trainer screen show on Night 1?

The Trainer appears on NIGHT I at LEVEL 1 in an official Steam store screenshot. A dumbbell-style LEVEL bar shows many nodes ahead (achievements reference Trainer level 20 for Overtrained). The screen shows one Affliction card per player beneath the party.

Readings below are as shown in the official Steam store screenshots; the release build may differ.

Player slot Affliction On-screen effect text
(party) Recklessness I Sometimes attack nearby enemies involuntarily
(party) On Fire I Sometimes catch fire when the crowd goes wild
(party) Weak Shoulder I Throw distance decreased
(party) Grip Fatigue I Often drop your shield when dodging

The On Fire I line references when the crowd goes wild without defining that state. Trigger conditions for crowd goes wild are not disclosed in official sources we read; see the crowd favorite and scoring guide for where the same phrase appears elsewhere.

Trainer progression ties to achievements Untrained (Win a run without levelling up at the Trainer), Overtrained (Win a run after reaching level 20 at the Trainer), and No Rest Day (Train to exhaustion). Per-level stat bonuses on the LEVEL bar are not disclosed in official sources we read.

What does the Trainer screen show on Night 8 at Level 11?

A Gameplay Trailer frame shows a different night and Trainer rank: NIGHT VIII at LEVEL 11, with four new level-I afflictions. Readings are as shown in the official Gameplay Trailer; the release build may differ.

Affliction On-screen effect text
Twisted Ankle I Dodge direction is less controllable
Colour Blindness I Can’t see much colour
Notorious I If the crowd go wild they will throw things
Broken Finger I Throws a little to the left

Trainer Level 11 on Night VIII lists four level-I afflictions above four beasts lifting weights in a chained party.

This screen shows different affliction cards on a later verified night and that Trainer LEVEL can rise deep into a run. Whether cards rotate on a fixed schedule is not disclosed—only that at least two verified nights show different entries.

What options does the Healer screen list on Night 4?

The Gameplay Trailer shows a HEALER NPC on NIGHT IV with the line “Your health is important to me, as you’re my ticket out of here.” Six selectable cards appear. Each card shows a heart icon and a number in the corner; what that number means is not explained on screen—we only note that cards display a heart icon and a number.

Readings are as shown in the official Gameplay Trailer; the release build may differ.

Option On-screen effect text Heart icon + number (as shown)
Missing Toe III Trip after continuously moving a short distance 87
Random Affliction II ??? 53
Intoxication II Can’t walk straight 50
Sweaty Palms II Always disarmed when missing an attack 24
Panic I Sometimes dodge away from enemies 18
Water Must have 20 or more health 0

Bottom health readouts on the same frame show P1 59/97, P2 57/73, P3 44/97, and P4 0/97. We do not interpret knockdown rules from those numbers alone.

Healer on Night IV offers affliction cures and water with heart icons and numbers on each card while four player health totals show one player at 0/97.

On NIGHT V, a follow-up Healer frame includes “And just before the expiry date was approaching, too.” and a central popup PARANOIA III — CAN’T SEPARATE REAL ENEMIES FROM HALLUCINATIONS.

Paranoia III popup at the Healer on Night V describes hallucinations while a purple beast drinks a potion at 78/107 HP.

The Ultra Hydrated achievement (Win a run while only ever drinking water) shows water is a valid long-term choice, not only a Healer UI curiosity.

What is the difference between Surgeon and Healer?

Surgeon appears in Steam store and announcement prose: between acts they can treat afflictions or offer augmentations with a cost, including amputation. Healer is the on-screen title in the Gameplay Trailer frames above, with potion-like affliction options and water.

Featherweight has not stated whether Surgeon and Healer are the same character, two phases of one service, or separate systems. This page does not treat them as equivalent or distinct beyond that gap.

How do skills tie to afflictions and the crowd?

On NIGHT I, the CHOOSE YOUR SKILL screen lists skills in the same flow as the Trainer UI. One visible card is On a Roll — Kills grant 4s of INVULNERABILITY if the crowd is going WILD (screenshot typography uses mixed case). A background card named Turn the Tides shows only partial text (Blocked projectiles …); we do not complete the sentence.

A sign reads “Can’t choose first skill”; its meaning is not disclosed in official sources we read.

On Fire I (Trainer) and On a Roll (skills) both mention crowd wild states without defining triggers. For post-battle CROWD FAVORITE labels and score banners, use the crowd favorite and scoring guide.
